Mountain group 🏔️🧗♂️
The HSSR Mountain group is a diverse group of outdoor enthusiasts and mountaineers, from camping and hiking to skiing and high-altitude mountaineering. The group focuses on improving and maintaining knowledge of all major aspects of mountaineering with the goal of preparing members for search and rescue operations in the mountains and on glaciers.
The group's program is diverse and encompasses both organized exercises and a platform for members to put together trips and expeditions. Through regular training and experience, the group's ability to tackle challenging tasks in the mountains increases.
The group's main focus areas
🔹 Mountain Rescue Operations – Training in rescue procedures, equipment and systems for mountain rescue, including steep and companion rescue. Members learn to work in teams in the installation and support of steep rescue systems, belaying and safety work.
🔹 Glacier Operations – Knowledge of safety aspects of glacier travel, including route selection, line setup, and crevasse rescue. Preparation for glacier searches, both rough searches with extensive traversing and fine searches, where gullies and line work are important aspects.
🔹 Search in steep terrain – Skills in working independently and in a team in difficult mountain conditions. Members learn to assess their own abilities, use climbing, descent and descent in rescue operations, and assess avalanche risk. Training in the use of crampons, installation of snow and rock protection, and general movement in steep mountain terrain.
🔹 Rescue and patient transport – Knowledge of the equipment and transport of injured people on different types of stretchers, whether in line restraints or carrying. Members learn about the workings of helicopter operations and how to best ensure the safety of patients in difficult situations.
🔹 Safety and equipment – Being able to assess the physical condition of oneself and fellow hikers, especially with regard to cold, fatigue, and hypothermia, and taking appropriate action. The group emphasizes a good knowledge of one's own equipment and skills in first aid for wounds, cuts, and fractures in the mountains.
The mountaineering group lays the foundation for safe and professional mountaineering within the group and prepares members for challenging situations that may arise during calls. With shared knowledge and experience, members will be better equipped to work in search and rescue operations in the most difficult terrain in Iceland. 🏔️🎒
