Maintenance of hiking trails in the Hengill area – Important fundraising for HSSR 🥾🔧
The Hengill area is one of the most popular outdoor recreation areas in the country and lies in a high-temperature zone 20 km southeast of Reykjavík. Every year, tens of thousands of Icelanders and foreign tourists visit the area to enjoy the diverse hiking trails, which total about 110 km in length.
To ensure the safety of hikers and preserve nature, a network of marked hiking trails, information signs, and hiking huts has been installed. Orka náttúrunnar (formerly Orkuveita Reykjavíkur) has led this work since 1990 in collaboration with local governments in the area.
HSSR is responsible for maintaining the stakes in the Hengill area.
The Reykjavík Scout Auxiliary takes care of the maintenance of the area's hiking trails, especially when it comes to installing and maintaining markers that point the way for hikers.
This project ensures that all major hiking trails are well marked and safe for outdoor enthusiasts, both in the summer and during winter when visibility can be low.
Important fundraising for the village
Maintaining the Hengill area is not only important for outdoor enthusiasts – it is also one of HSSR's fundraising efforts. The project supports the work of the unit and helps fund equipment and training for the calls the unit carries out.
By using and enjoying the hiking trails in the Hengill area, you are indirectly supporting the work of the rescue team! 🏞️💙
