Road closures for the Icelandic Road Administration – Important fundraising and safety project ❄️🚧

When weather and conditions make roads impassable, it is necessary to resort to closures to ensure the safety of road users. The Reykjavík Scouts' Aid Corps takes care of this. road closures for the Icelandic Road Administration, where the force's vehicles are placed at roadblocks to prevent drivers from entering closed roads and to provide information to those who need it.

Who makes the decision to close?

It is the Icelandic Road Administration or other authorities, such as the police, that make the decision to close roads. The Rescue Team only carries out closures in accordance with recommendations from these parties and never makes such decisions itself.

How do road closures work?

Road closures are only installed when weather poses a danger to road users.

🚧 Examples of common road closures:
🔹 Suðurlandsvegur at the roundabout at Norðlingaholt when Hellisheiði and Þrengsli are impassable.

Two types of roadblocks are in use:
⚠️ Soft closure – Drivers are advised to avoid crossing but there is no official closure.
⛔ Strict closure – People are prohibited from crossing and the road is completely closed.

Why are road closures important?

Storms and adverse conditions can create life-threatening situations on the country's roads. By positioning the force's vehicles on closed roads:

✔️ We reduce the chance of people accidentally bypassing the closure.
✔️ We answer questions from passersby on the spot.
✔️ We ensure that the closure is clear and works as intended.

Fundraising for HSSR

This project is not only an important safety project but also a fundraiser for HSSR. The Icelandic Road Administration pays for this service, and that support goes directly to the operation of the unit, equipment purchases, and training of members.

By following the road closures and listening to the instructions of the rescue teams, you are not only ensuring your own safety – you are also supporting the work of the HSSR! 🚧💙
